• Marriage in Italy compared to moving countries

Marriage is a significant change in anyone’s life. Can you imagine what happens when this change occurs along with the moving countries?

This is a moment full of emotions. On the one hand, marriage in Italy can often mean the realization of a dream and, on the other, there are many uncertainties about what the future will be like.

It is normal to ask: what is it like to live in Italy or what will my life be like after moving?

We often forget that:

Moving countries is not like changing clothes!

If you want to have a more relaxed and fluid moving, know that preparing and creating an action plan is the best way to achieve this.

Every day I help people to create the action plan to move more easily in Italy, increasing the chances of facing the changes with greater peace of mind and achieving the desired success.

In this sense, I wrote an article on what to do before moving to Italy: Live and Find a job in Italy: what should you do FIRST.

Is marrying an Italian and moving to Italy synonymous with abandoning your career?

Casamento na Itália: trabalhar na Itália

Unfortunately, this is the reality of many Brazilians who have moved to Italy!

However…

Although it is the reality of many, it does not mean that it is the only way.

I am an expert in the Italian job market and support people to find work in Italy. I can tell you, with full confidence, that it is possible to find work in your professional field here in Italy.

The fact that it is possible does not mean that it is intuitive, not even easy.

The first thing we need to do is break this belief that it is not possible to have a satisfying career just because you are a foreigner.

Working in Italy will not only bring you benefits, but by you feeling satisfied, your whole family will benefit.

Marriage in Italy: scientific research

I came to Italy without any plans and faced many obstacles in my early years. I had many doubts and curiosities about what could facilitate the integration of Brazilians here in Italy.

During my internship at the Consulate of Brazil in Milan, I started studying the Brazilian immigrant population in Italy. I realized that 70% of the Brazilians who lived in Italy were women and that most of them came for love reasons (marriage in Italy).

Later, during my master’s in Italy, I did several researches on socio-cultural integration and the work of Brazilians here in Italy. In one of these researches I studied the impact of work on women who decide to live in Italy after marriage.

The results I have achieved have been impressive, I will present the details below.

Marriage in Italy: an important variable

Casamento na Itália: trabalho

In a research I did during my master, I studied Brazilian women who had moved to Italy to live together with their Italian husbands. I divided these women into two groups:

  • First group was represented by women who did not work
  • Second group were women who worked

The result has been impressive! The “work” variable made the difference. Next, I will talk about the trajectory of these women in each of their respective groups.

First group: women who did not work

Talking with these women, I realized that the first obstacle to overcome was the acceptance of the new reality. The longer these women resisted the change, the less they were able to integrate in the society.

Here are some of the aspects of this new reality that created unease:

  • Climate
  • Language
  • Italian culture
  • Routine change
  • Lack of friends and family left in Brazil
It is necessary to embrace the new phase!

When we are in a new environment, the tendency is to close ourselves, especially when we don’t have the support we need. However, the consequences of this defense mechanism are:

  • Excessive dependence on the husband in different areas of life, such as: social, psychological, economic, etc.
  • No friends outside of your husband’s circle of friends and family.
  • Doesn’t recognise itself in the mirror anymore.
  • Weakened identity and consequently saying yes to everything and everyone.
  • Episodes of depression.

This is very serious! It started with a dream and cannot end with depression in a place away from home.

Obviously, several factors can influence the improvement of this integration. Next, I will focus on an area in which I specialised.

Second group – Women who worked

Casamento na Itália: trabalhar na Itália

One of the important things that this group of women did was to accept and face the new reality.

In other words, they faced the new reality as a challenge and looked at the world around them with a look of curiosity. However, I have observed other behaviours, such as:

  • Commitment to build their own road.
  • Seek support and information.
  • Participate in courses.
  • Make new friends without husband’s help.

When they started working, personal fulfilment increased, as did their self-confidence. You can imagine the satisfaction of being able to continue your career in the country you have chosen to raise your family.

You’re not alone!

Thinking of being alone is not a good feeling, especially because we can feel lost without knowing what to do. So, be part of my community and work hard to find a job here in Italy.
