But here I will try reverse psychology! 😉
We are often pretty sure that we are on the right track and that we are doing everything is necessary to have a satisfying career here in Italy. However, if the result you are getting is not what you expected, we must ask ourselves: why?
But that’s not all, it is also necessary to change the strategy.
Let’s see if you are following the 3 golden rules to not find a job in Italy.
• How to not find a job in Italy: the 3 golden rules
1. Don’t have a professional goal
Not having a professional goal is not only very common, but it is also very serious. Unfortunately!
The best way to get anywhere is having no goal.
Do you want to know what is one of the first questions I ask my customers?
What is your professional goal?
This question has other variations, such as:
- What would you like to do in Italy?
- Which career would give you the most satisfaction?
- What kind of job are you looking for?
Unfortunately, it is very common to hear these answers:
- Anyone
- I have no preferences
- It can be anything
- The important thing is that it is an honest job
There are many reasons why people answer me this way. However, what I do notice is strong insecurity and sometimes even the fear of saying what you really want to do. It seems that it is forbidden to do what you love when you move to another country.
The other reason is not to have very clear what you want and what you can do.
Regardless of the reason you have, know that it is necessary to define your professional goal, to increase your chances of finding a job in Italy.
Do not forget it: those who seek everything, find nothing!
2. Don’t listen to the advice of people who have been successful
That’s right, if you know someone who is successful and has a job he loves here in Italy, “run away” from that person. What are you going to ask someone who got there? An advice? Do not do it!
The easiest way to not find a job in Italy is to join people who complain all day and are frustrated professionally. These are the worst people to ask for advice, as they will speak and give opinions considering only their own frustrations.
If a person didn’t make it, it doesn’t mean you won’t make it!
I heard a sentence that makes a lot of sense in this conversation:
You are the average of the 5 people you live with most.
Who are the people who advise you? Who are the people who give you work advice? Are they people who have experience, expertise and results in that area?
I’ll be clearer! If I want to find out the secret to having a happy relationship, I will ask a person who, at least, has a relationship that I admire and desire.
This rule also applies when you want to find a job in Italy or when we intend to move here.
I say this because I have seen many people stop dreaming because they have listened to the wrong people.
3. You think you know everything
If you live in Italy, have worked here or have Italian citizenship, it means that you know all about Italian culture and the Italian job market. It’s not true?
I always say this sentence:
Being Italian does not mean knowing how to find a job!
In fact, being Brazilian is not synonymous with knowing how to find a job in Brazil. There are no skills that are passed on through citizenship.
It takes a lot of dedication and humility to learn. Like everything in life and especially today, when the job market is so dynamic, fast and liquid; as Zigmunt Bauman would say.

Start slowly, but don’t stop halfway. Create an action plan and execute it.
